Why can't I be consistent with Bible reading and Prayer?

I forget most of what I read (mostly the n.t. letters and most of old testament) and I'm suppose to feel joyous and thrilled when praying but it feels more like a chore. Do you have ideas on how to have a wonderful quiet time with God (I'm a conservative christian)
