Why does my blackberry curve say sim card error?

My blackberry curve keeps having 'sim card error' come up, it usually goes after 2 or 3 reboots, and tends to work better without wifi on. I have removed the sim card numerous amounts of times and cleaned but nothing seems to do it. I'm late on my payment could this be it??
